Many of us started out college in on-campus housing. The most popular here at BYU are the Helaman Hall dorms. Living in the dorms you are required to purchase a meal plan. There are two options, one which allows you 10 dollars a day to use in the cafeteria or any restaurant on campus, or the Open-Door plan with which you can enter the cafeteria unlimited times every day. They are great options which allow unrestrained food possibilities.
While the possibilities of a buffet style cafeteria do offer freshman a great amount of freedom, they can also present a big temptation. The cafeteria offers two different hot meals a day, and always has a cereal bar, salad bar and burgers to order. Some things to avoid in the dining hall are juices, sodas, fatty breakfasts, and fried foods. There are healthy alternatives to these, some include fresh fruit, the salad bar, whole grains, and frozen yogurt. It is a great idea to load up on these items first and then see if you have room for a few of the French fries you love.
